The materials in this collection document the Jewish communities in Westphalia and in particular the town of Hoexter. It contains a manuscript written by Alex Bernstein called "Die Juden im Kreise Hoexter (Westf.) und benachbarten Bezirken - In den letzten circa 200 Jahren", which includes a list of Jews in Hoexter as well as a map of Hoexter county. Folders 4-15 contain handwritten notebooks with information regarding cemeteries in various communities and lists of names, marriages, births, and deaths. A 23 page history of the Eichengruen family written by Gustav Eichengruen is included, called "Die Eichen(l)gruens zugleich ein Beitrag zur Geschichte der westfaelischen Juden"

This collection contains materials written and/or collected by Alex Bernstein. Most is focused on the Jewish communities in Westphalia and in particular the town of Hoexter. Genealogical information is featured throughout, including a history of the Eichengruen family

Alex Bernstein was born in 1862 in Hoexter. He became an American citizen and lived in Chicago. He died in 1941 in San Diego
